The exhibition "Heads on shoulders" highlights every aspect of portrait busts in 17th- and 18th-century art in the Low Countries. Portrait sculpture is perhaps associated most readily with famous politicians, dignitaries, scientists and aristocrats. But they were by no means the only ones to be immortalised in marble. From the end of the 18th century, famous actresses were, for example, also commonly depicted. However, this exhibition features not only portrait busts modelled from life, but also head-and-shoulder sculptures representing mythological characters, ancient philosophers and writers, and emperors of the past. Sculptures from classical antiquity were, after all, a source of great inspiration in 17th- and 18th-century art. Artists such as Artus Quellinus I, Lucas Faydherbe and Francois Duquesnoy were unparalleled masters at such realistic sculptures and, not surprisingly, they achieved great international fame in their lifetime. This forthcoming exhibition of busts of mythical heroes and rulers, true-to-life portrait sculptures of famous writers, members of the bourgeoisie and voluptuous actresses will introduce the visitor to the virtuosity of these artists.

Le superbe portrait de Nicolaes van Bambeeck date de 1641, est l'unique tableau de Rembrandt inconteste se trouvant dans une collection publique belge. Elle est la piece maitresse de la collection des peintures hollandaises du XVIIe siecle que possedent les Musees royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. Pour la circonstance, le portrait a ete, pour la seconde fois depuis 1814, reuni a son pendant, le non moins magnifique portrait d'Agatha Bas, execute egalement par Rembrandt et qui a trouve sa place definitive a Buckingham Palace a partir de 1819 ou 1820. La publication synthetise les recherches approfondies menees a cette occasion par la conservatrice Liesbeth De Belie : les portraits de Nicolaes van Bambeeck et d'Agatha Bas dans la carriere de Rembrandt, l'histoire de l'oeuvre, le style et l'iconographie. La restauration du tableau n'est pas oubliee, ni les portraits du couple Van Bambeeck et son epouse peints par d'autres artistes.

In this compelling book, John Pope-Hennessy shows how the Renaissance cult of individuality brought with it a demand that the features of the individual be perpetuated. This concept was first manifested in the portraits that fill the great Florentine fresco cycles and led, later in the fifteenth century, to the creation of the independent portrait by such artists as Botticelli, Antonio Pollaiuolo, Giovanni Bellini, and Antonello da Messina. Pope-Hennessy goes on to describe the process by which Titian and the great artists of the High Renaissance transformed the portrait from a record of appearance into an analysis of character.

Willem Key was one of the leading portrait and history painters in sixteenth-century Antwerp. He was born in Breda in 1516. Following in his older brother Wouter's footsteps, Willem went to Antwerp to become a painter. He studied under Pieter Coecke (1529) and later, like Frans Floris, apprenticed in the workshop of Lambert Lombard in Liege before becoming a free master in 1542. In 1568, just when he had reached the top of his abilities and enjoyed the patronage of outstanding individuals and institutions, Willem Key died suddenly. The artist?s biographer and painter Karel van Mander tells us that Key was blessed with ?Sulcke edele gheesten,? such a noble mind. And, he had a ?Docta manus,? a learned hand, as the Bruges humanist and painter Domenicus Lampsonius phrased this topos in 1572. This is the first monograph to place Willem Key and his oeuvre in a historical framework. It demonstrates why the nobility, including the Duke of Alba and Cardinal Granvelle, considered him the best portrait painter of his day and why leading humanists viewed his many history paintings as eloquent visualizations of contemporary art theory. The reason why Willem Key's peers regarded him as such an exceptional painter lay in his creative ability to do battle on an uneven playing field with the artists who had been to Italy. In his reconciliation of the Netherlandish tradition with the rapidly advancing Italian manner, Key grasped the spirit of the Renaissance as formulated by Alberti.
