‎Le chef-d'œuvre d'Antoine Ignace Melling, Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore, nous livre nos illustrations inspirantes de la semaine. Melling, né dans le sud de l'Allemagne d'un père artiste, élevé par un oncle peintre . Dans les années 1780, il avait rejoint la suite de l'ambassadeur de Russie et voyagé en Italie,en Égypte et à Constantinople.La vie de ce jeune artiste aventurier allait changer quand il a été présenté à Hatrice Sultan, sœur du Sultan ottoman Selim III . Impressionnée par son art et son sens du détail architectural, Hatrice Sultan a nommé Melling architecte impérial, poste qu'il a occupé pendant 18 ans.Pendant son séjour à Constantinople, Melling a conçu des jardins, des palais, des vêtements et des bijoux pour Hatrice Sultan. Il a également eu l’occasion de réaliser des dessins détaillés de l’intérieur des palais du sultan, d’observer la société ottomane et de dessiner Constantinople et ses environs. Melling est revenu à Paris en 1803 et a publié un prospectus pour les abonnés de ce qui serait son Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore.Après six ans, il avait collecté suffisamment d'argent et créé un atelier de gravure pour commencer la production de son travail. En 1809, Melling avait obtenu la description textuelle de ses plaques de Charles de Lacretelle et le premier des 12 numéros était publié, chacun avec quatre plaques. En 1819, les 12 numéros, une description topographique (par Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage) et trois cartes gravées avaient été publiés. Cette superbe collection de gravures offre certaines des premières vues intérieures des palais du sultan ainsi qu'un portrait très intime de la société ottomane. A picturesque voyage of Constantinople and the banks of the Bosphorus, gives us our inspiring illustrations for the week. Melling, born in the south of Germany to an artist father, raised by a painter uncle. In the 1780s he had joined the Russian ambassador's suite and traveled to Italy, Egypt and Constantinople. The life of this young adventurer artist was about to change when he was introduced to Hatrice Sultan, sister of the Ottoman Sultan Selim III. Impressed by his art and his sense of architectural detail, Hatrice Sultan appointed Melling imperial architect, a position he held for 18 years. During his stay in Constantinople, Melling designed gardens, palaces, clothing and jewelry for Hatrice Sultan. He also had the opportunity to realize detailed drawings of the interior of the Sultan’s palaces, observing Ottoman society and drawing Constantinople and its surroundings. Melling returned to Paris in 1803 and published a prospectus for subscribers of what would be his scenic voyage from Constantinople and the banks of the Bosphorus. After six years, he had collected enough money and created an engraving workshop to start producing his work. In 1809 Melling had obtained the text description of his Charles de Lacretelle plaques and the first of 12 issues was published, each with four plaques. In 1819, the 12 numbers, a topographic description (by Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage) and three engraved maps had been published. This superb collection of engravings offers some of the first interior views of the Sultan's palaces as well as a very intimate portrait of Ottoman society. ‎

‎Edition originale de cette relation de voyage en Arménie et en Perse due à Pierre Amédée Jaubert (1779-1847), traducteur et voyageur français. Elle est illustrée dun frontispice gravé et de 9 planches lithographiées de vues, scènes, portraits et costumes ainsi que d'une grande carte dépliante des pays compris entre Constantinople et Téhéran, dressée par Lapie, chef de l'escadron. La relation est suivie d'une notice du colonel Trezel sur le Gilan et le Mazandéran, deux provinces bordées par la mer Caspienne, au nord de Téhéran. En 1796, Pierre Amédée Jaubert s'inscrit à l'École spéciale des langues orientales, créée l'année précédente avec pour mission denseigner des langues orientales vivantes « dune utilité reconnue pour la politique et le commerce » à Paris. Il y est élève d'Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy et y apprend l'arabe, le persan et le turc. Il est alors membre de la Commission des sciences et des arts lors de la campagne d'Égypte où il sert d'interprète (voire Interprète militaire) à Bonaparte entre 1798 et 1799. En 1802, Napoléon le charge d'accompagner l'ambassadeur Horace Sébastiani en mission à Tripoli, en Égypte, à Constantinople et en Syrie. Envoyé par Napoléon pour négocier l'alliance franco-russe avec la Perse en 1805, il est arrêté en chemin à la frontière turco-iranienne et est emprisonné par le pacha de Bayazid, mais il senfuit et reprend sa route en passant par le Kurdistan, l'Arménie, Tabriz, Ardebil ou encore Qazvin, et arrive enfin à la cour de Fath Ali Shah, à Téhéran en 1806. Là bas, il occupe divers postes administratifs avant de repartir ayant été nommé chargé d'affaires à Constantinople peu avant la chute de l'Empire, avant de revenir en France. Cest ce périple qui fait lobjet du présent ouvrage. Cette relation est riche de descriptions et d'observations sur les murs, les usages, la religion, la population et la situation militaire de la Perse. Contemporary full calf, ornate smooth spine, red morocco title-piece, marbled edges (binding rubbed, joints worn). First edition of this account of a trip to Armenia and Persia by French translator and traveler Pierre Amédée Jaubert (1779-1847). It is illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 9 lithographed plates of views, scenes, portraits and costumes, as well as a large fold-out map of the countries between Constantinople and Teheran, drawn by Lapie, squadron leader. The report is followed by a note by Colonel Trezel on Gilan and Mazandéran, two provinces bordering the Caspian Sea, north of Teheran. In 1796, Pierre Amédée Jaubert enrolled at the École spéciale des langues orientales, created the previous year to teach living oriental languages "of recognized utility for politics and commerce" in Paris. There, he studied under Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy, learning Arabic, Persian and Turkish. He was a member of the Commission des sciences et des arts during the Egyptian campaign, where he served as interpreter (or military interpreter) to Bonaparte between 1798 and 1799. In 1802, Napoleon asked him to accompany ambassador Horace Sébastiani on missions to Tripoli, Egypt, Constantinople and Syria. Sent by Napoleon to negotiate the Franco-Russian alliance with Persia in 1805, he was arrested on his way to the Turkish-Iranian border and imprisoned by the Bayazid pasha, but escaped and resumed his journey via Kurdistan, Armenia, Tabriz, Ardebil and Qazvin, finally arriving at the court of Fath Ali Shah in Tehran in 1806. There, he held various administrative posts before leaving again, having been appointed chargé d'affaires in Constantinople shortly before the fall of the Empire, before returning to France. This journey is the subject of the present book. This account is rich in descriptions and observations on the customs, habits, religion, population and military situation of Persia.
