‎Certificat de noblesse donnant droit à John Bazely Esquire, capitaine de la Royal Navy, le droit d'utiliser les armes et emblèmes de sa famille au titre de seul fils survivant de John et petit-fils James Bazely tous deux de Douvres dans le comté de Kent.‎

[Londres], 1784. 1784 1 feuille de parchemin in-plano (505 x 435 mm), manuscrit sur 25 ligne calligraphié à lencre brune dans un encadrement à lencre rouge et frise, surmonté de 4 blasons armoiriés polychrome peints à la gouache et à lor, signatures en bas sur un repli, empreintes de cachets sur papier bleu nuit contrecollés à gauche, 2 cachets de cire rouge fixés en bas par des rubans de soie rose rangés dans des boites métalliques à décor de fleurs peintes, petit ex-libris armorié gravé « G R » contrecollé au dos. (petites plis à lextrémité supérieure, coloris très frais). Boitier de bois articulé d'origine à fermoirs de laiton (542 x 135 mm), extérieur recouvert de basane brune décorée de frises de fers à froid et dorés de feuillages et de fleurs de lys, intérieur garni de papier dominoté polychrome et doré à motifs floraux. (usures et petits manques, or effacé).‎

‎Très beau certificat de noblesse du Capitaine John Bazely Esquire, brillant officier dans la flotte britannique qui débute sa carriére et s'illustre aucour de la guerre dindépendance Américaine et finit vice-amiral de l'escadron rouge de la Royal Navy. L'amiral John Bazely (1740 - 1809) est un officier expérimenté et très respecté de la Royal Navy britannique qui sert lors de trois guerres et participe à de nombreux combat. Son premier fait darmes est la capture du brick américain USS Lexington en 1777 (à lorigine une brigantine de 14 canons nommée « Wild Duck », acheté en 1776 pour servir dans la flotte de la jeune Amérique indépendante] Cette première action de Bazely a lieu au large d'Ouessant le 22 septembre 1777, lorsque l« Alert » , armé de 10 canons, aperçoit et engage lUSS Lexington , encalminé . Un duel de trois heures, de 7 h à 10 h, endommage gravement les deux navires. Le navire américain tente de s'échapper vers le sud, mais Bazely le poursuivit et le rattrape à 13 h. À 13 h 30, il forçe le Lexington à se rendre ; le navire compte sept morts et onze blessés, contre deux morts et trois blessés pour l' Alert . Un équipage de prise fait alors route vers la Grande-Bretagne. Bazely est salué et promu au grade de commandant, puis de capitaine de vaisseau en avril 1778. Il prend le commandement du « HMS Formidable » et participe à la première bataille d'Ouessant . Le « Formidable » subit 16 morts et 49 blessés. Il commande ensuite la frégate « HMS Pegasus » rattaché à la flotte de George Rodney pour le soulagement du Siège de Gibraltar . Il participe à la capture d'un convoi d'armement espagnol au large du cap Finisterre le 8 janvier 1780, puis à la bataille du cap Saint-Vincent. Le « Pegasus » accompagne ensuite Rodney et participe à la bataille de la Martinique aux Antilles. Bazely rapporta les dépêches de la bataille en Grande-Bretagne et reçut bientôt le commandement du « HMS Apollo » , puis du « HMS Amphion », au commandement duquel Bazely soutient les troupes britanniques lors de la bataille de Groton Heights et supervisant l'incendie de New London, dans le Connecticut, et des magasins militaires de la ville. À la fin de la guerre, Bazely resta en service, commandant le « HMS Alfred » à Chatham pendant les dix années de paix. Il finira sa carrière comme vice-amiral de l'escadron rouge de la Royal Navy. Le présent document constitue un titre de noblesse donnant à cet officier de la Navy le droit d'utiliser les armes et emblèmes de sa famille au titre de seul fils survivant de John et petit-fils James Bazely tous deux de Douvres dans le comté de Kent. Il sachève par la formule : « In witness where of we said GARTHER and CLARENCEUX Kings of Arms have to these presents subscribed our Names and affixed the seals of our several offices this sixth day of Augustin the twenty fourth year of the Reign of our Soereign Lord GEORGE the Third by the grâce of GOD King of Great Britain France and Ireland defender of the Faith : and in the year of our LORD one thousand seven hundred and eighty four. » Le texte est finement calligraphié à lencre brune dans un encadrement à lencre rouge. Il est surmonté de 4 blasons armoiries peints à la gouache et à lor, avec signatures en bas, empreintes de cachets sur papier, et 2 cachets de cire rouge sont reliés en bas par des rubans de soie et rangés dans des boites métalliques à décor de fleurs peintes. Provenance : Un petit ex-libris armorié gravé « G R » contrecollé au dos. Lensemble est rangé dans son boitier dorigine recouvert de basane brune décoré de frises de fleurs de lys, et garni intérieurement dun superbe papier dominoté polychrome. Très bel ensemble conservé dans sa condition dorigine. 1 sheet of parchment (505 x 435 mm), 25-line manuscript calligraphied in brown ink and framed in red ink and frieze, surmounted by 4 polychrome coats of arms painted in gouache and gold, signatures at bottom of fold, stamp imprints on midnight-blue paper laminated on the left, 2 red wax stamps fastened at the bottom with pink silk ribbons in metal boxes decorated with painted flowers, small armorial bookplate engraved G R laminated on the back. (minor creasing at upper end, very fresh coloring). Original hinged wooden case with brass clasps (542 x 135 mm), exterior covered in brown basane decorated with gilt and cold-iron friezes of foliage and fleurs-de-lis, interior lined with polychrome and gilt dominoté paper with floral motifs. (Wear and small chips, faded gold). Very fine certificate of nobility for Captain John Bazely Esquire, a brilliant officer in the British fleet who began his career and distinguished himself in the American War of Independence, eventually becoming Vice-Admiral of the Royal Navy's Red Squadron. Admiral John Bazely (1740 - 1809) was an experienced and highly respected officer in the British Royal Navy, serving in three wars and taking part in numerous battles. His first feat of arms was the capture of the American brig USS Lexington in 1777 (originally a 14-gun brigantine named Wild Duck, purchased in 1776 for service in the fleet of the newly independent America). Bazely's first action took place off Ushant on September 22, 1777, when the 10-gun Alert sighted and engaged the trapped USS Lexington. A three-hour duel, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., severely damaged both ships. The American ship tried to escape to the south, but Bazely pursued and caught up with her at 1 pm. At 1:30 p.m., he forced the Lexington to surrender; the ship suffered seven dead and eleven wounded, compared with two dead and three wounded for the Alert . A prize crew then set sail for Great Britain. Bazely was saluted and promoted to commander, then captain in April 1778. He took command of HMS Formidable and took part in the First Battle of Ushant. The Formidable suffered 16 dead and 49 wounded. He then commanded the frigate HMS Pegasus, attached to George Rodney's fleet to relieve the Siege of Gibraltar. He took part in the capture of a Spanish armament convoy off Cape Finisterre on January 8, 1780, then in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent. The Pegasus then accompanied Rodney and took part in the Battle of Martinique in the West Indies. Bazely brought battle dispatches back to Britain and was soon given command of the HMS Apollo, then the HMS Amphion, in command of which Bazely supported British troops at the Battle of Groton Heights and oversaw the burning of New London, Connecticut, and the city's military stores. At the end of the war, Bazely remained in service, commanding the HMS Alfred at Chatham during the ten years of peace. He finished his career as vice-admiral of the Royal Navy's Red Squadron. The present document constitutes a title of nobility giving this Navy officer the right to use the arms and emblems of his family as the only surviving son of John and grandson James Bazely, both of Dover in the county of Kent. Provenance: A small armorial bookplate engraved G R on the spine. The set is housed in its original brown basane case decorated with fleur-de-lis friezes, and lined with superb polychrome dominoté paper. Very fine set, preserved in its original condition.‎
