1887 488 p., 71 lithographed pls, contemporary hcalf (spine with four raised bands and gilt lettering and ornaments, original front covers [chipped] bound in). This copy once belonged to the British botanist and malacologist James Cosmo Melville (1845-1929). It has a label on verso side front cover that reads: ''Dr. J. Cosmo Meville, F.L.S., Meole Brace Hall, Shrewsbury', and two of the original front covers bear his signature.A rare copy, in a fine binding and with an interesting provenance, of this important monograph of these well known families. Many species (including types) are here for the first time depicted. The First series of the Manual of Conchology is a great rarity. Only about 65 (of 250) copies were sold to the general public.
