The first 11 plates in old negative copies (thus white drawings on a black background), uniform early 20th century (ca. 1900-1920) brown cloth with marbled boards and gilt lettering on spine. Some wear on boards and spine portfolio. Volumes 1-2 are the 1851 edition printed on lower quality paper thus these two with some scattered foxing). Library stamps on free end-papers and title-pages, else a good copy.Apparently the volumes were given in 1970 to the Zoologisch Museum Amsterdam (which no longer exists) by the Dutch botanist and entomologist Gideon Kruseman (1904-1992). Some of the pencil annotations in the books might be in his hand, or by an earlier owner of this set.Johann Wilhelm Meigen (1764-1845) was a German entomologist specialized in Diptera, and is sometimes called the father of dipterology. In any case the above work is his magnum opus, his chief accomplishment. In all he described 3500 species (mainly diptera).
