1891-1898 cccxx, 1011, 201, vi, 576 p., contemporary half calf. Library stamps, Paper label on spines. A few annotations. Inner joints volume 3 somewhat weak. Rare complete set.Carl Ernst Otto Kuntze (1843-1907) was German botanist which traveled widely around the world. He used the botanical collection from his first voyages (ca. 7,700 specimens) to write his revolutionary three-volume treatise, Revisio Generum Plantarum. The publication came as a shock to the botanical community, since Kuntze had entirely revised taxonomy (and changed about 30.000 names of plants!). It was therefor widely rejected or deliberately ignored. His ideas about botanic nomenclature created a schism between competing sets of Rules of Botanical Nomenclature. The conflict came to a head at the 2nd International Botanical Congress in 1905, two years before Kuntze's death. Kuntze's work cast a strong light on the inadequacy of previous approaches to botanical nomenclature. This schism was not resolved until 1930.
