‎Summary What did the body mean for inhabitants of the medieval Norse-speaking world? How was the physical body viewed? Where did the boundary lie between corporality and the psychological or spiritual aspects of humanity? And how did such an understanding tie in with popular literary motifs such as shape-shifting? This monograph seeks to engage with these questions by offering the first focused work to delineate a space for ideas about the body within the Old Norse world. The connections between emotions and bodily changes are examined through discussion of the physical manifestations of emotion (tiredness, changes in facial colour, swelling), while the author offers a detailed analysis of the Old Norse term hamr, a word that could variously mean shape, form, and appearance, but also character. Attention is also paid to changes of physical form linked to flight and battle ecstasy, as well as to magical shapeshifting. Through this approach, diametrically different ways of thinking about the connection between body and soul can be found, and the argument made that within the Old Norse world, concepts of change within the body rested along a spectrum that ranged from the purely physical through to the psychological. Almost half of the 578 deputies representing the Third Estate were lawyers ! After a short struggle with the other two Estates and the King, the National Constituent Assembly was established and became the powerful legislative and constitution-making body of France. This body passed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, passed provisions announcing equality before the law, freedom from arrest without due process, freedom of speech and press. It was this body that decided to confiscate and nationalize the properties of the Catholic church, it replaced the chaotic structure of the Ancien regime with a rational administrative system that consisted of 83 departments, it set important judicial reform in motion by establishing a new, graduated system of tribunals in both civil and criminal cases, abolished the sale of legal offices, and introduced the elective principle for judges, the most striking aspect of these judicial reorganization was its almost total separation from the crown, and it was this body that drafted the 1791 Constitution for France, the Assemblys major contribution to the French Revolution. Many of these topics are represented here in this collection, as well as a good number of other topics the Constituent had to deal with.‎
