Sage, (1740/1824), at first apothecary at the Invalides, was from 1778 professor of assaying at the Paris Mint, where he established a museum of minerals. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Ecole des Mines in 1783 and became its Director. In 1801, he became a member of the Institut. He remained a phlogistian till his death, published pamphlets against the new nomenclature and theory in 1810... Sage discovered hypophosphoric acid. He showed that phosphorus reduces solutions of metallic salts to the metals. He obtrained crystals from a solution of a copper salt in ammonia and observed crystals of red oxide of copper on a copper statue which had lain for some time under water. He showed that silver chloride is reduced in iron. Sage seems to have discovered solid potassium ferrocyanide independently of Guyton de Morveau...". (Partington III pp. 97/98) ---- Cf.
