Stuttgart und Tübingen J. G. Cotta'scher Verlag 1846 Un bel exemplaire de cette première édition. Reliure en plein cuir rouge avec d'abondantes décorations dorées. Titre gravé sur acier, 36 planches gravées sur papier de Chine. 24 vignettes gravées sur bois par R. Rahn et A. Schleich d'après Wilhelm von Kaulbach. La reliure est un peu frottée avec de légères taches. La charnière est fissurée, mais tient encore bien. Papiers de garde blancs (presque papier peint). Première édition publiée par Cotta avec des illustrations de Kaulbach. Cette édition est considérée comme l'une des plus populaires de toutes les illustrations de Goethe. Kaulbach appréciait beaucoup le contraste ironique entre les hexamètres sérieux et le contenu de l'histoire avec ses farces scélérates, et était d'avis que l'illustrateur devrait également inventer un contraste similaire. Au début et à la fin de chaque chapitre du texte se trouvent des vignettes gravées sur bois contenant des satires pleines d'esprit. L'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, avec quelques rousseurs et noircissements sur les pages. 257 pages. Références : Brown, J. Buchanan. A lovely copy of this first edition. Full red leather binding with profuse gilt decoration. With steel-engraved title, 36 steel-engraved plates on papier de Chine. 24 wood-engraved vignettes by R. Rahn and A. Schleich after Wilhelm von Kaulbach. The binding is a little rubbed with light staining. Cracking to the hinge, but still holding well. White end papers (almost wallpaper). First edition published by Cotta with illustrations by Kaulbach. This edition is considered one of the most popular of all Goethe illustrations. Kaulbach greatly enjoyed the ironic contrast between the serious hexameters and the content of the story with its scoundrel pranks, and was of the opinion that the illustrator should also invent a similar contrast. At the beginning and end of each chapter in the text there are woodcut vignettes with witty satires. Clean and tidy throughout, with just a little foxing / darkening to the pages. 257 pages.
