Brooke-Hitching 283. volume.1 recounts the first part of his journey, from St Petersburg towards Herat. Volume.2 recounts the time he spent in Afghanistan, with appendices on the possible invasion of India and the country's history. Conolly (1807-1842) was a British intelligence officer in the service of the British East India Company. He coined the term, "The Great Game," to describe the military/economic imperial competition between Great Britain and the Russian Empire in Central Asia. He was captured in Bukhara with Lt. Col. Charles Stoddart in 1841, and subsequently executed by Emir Nasrullah Khan on the charge of being a British spy. He was beheaded in the public square in front of the Ark Fortress of Bukhara. 1834.
