De Japanse kunst is iets als de primitieven, als de Grieken, als onze oude Hollandse schilders, Rembrandt, Potter, Hals, Vermeer, Van Ostade, Ruysdael. Dat kent geen einde (brief van Vincent van Gogh aan zijn broer Theo). In Van Gogh en Japan beschrijft Louis van Tilborgh de liefde van Vincent van Gogh voor Japanse grafiek. Van Gogh begon met het verzamelen van deze prentkunst tijdens zijn verblijf in Parijs en raakte overtuigd van de noodzaak om op 'zijn Japans' te kijken en te werken. Toen hij begin 1888 naar Arles verhuisde, groeide dit bijna uit tot een religie. Het welslagen, de toekomst van de moderne kunst achtte hij nu vrijwel geheel afhankelijk van de navolging van dit exotische voorbeeld. Maar hoe sterk ook, na een jaar verdween Van Goghs liefde voor Japan naar de achtergrond. Zijn bewondering voor de Oosterse prestatie bleef groot, maar zijn eigen pogingen om in hun geest verder te werken, vond hij nu te hoog gegrepen. 'Welnu als schilder zal ik nooit iets belangrijks betekenen, dat besef ik ten volle', zo schreef hij teleurgesteld. Hoe onterecht dat eigen oordeel was, laat Van Gogh en Japan goed zien. Deel 2 in de serie Van Gogh in focus, een reeks over het leven en werk van Vincent van Gogh, uitgegeven onder auspici n van het Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
