Trained at the Royal Academy of Arts and initially influenced by Turner, Fautrier turned to abstraction in the 1940s, launching the art informel movement which branched out into Tachisme. His interaction with the intellectual figures of his time, including Jean Paulhan, Paul Ãluard, Francis Ponge, Renà Char and Andrà Malraux, resulted in politically resonant works such as his series Otages (1943-1945), Objets (1947-1948) and Partisans (1956), here presented in detail.
