L'autore ha percorso questa terra passo a passo, in automobile, in jeep, a cavallo, in sella a mule, a piedi; ha visitato una a una le città moderne e conosciuto la maggior parte degli antichi centri sacrali; ha attraversato da cima a fondo con una marcia lenta, spesse volte durissima e sempre affascinante la immensa foresta tropicale centro-americana; ha incontrato gli ultimi Lacandones ecc...
