Il a commencé sa carrière dans la série télévisée " Les Aventures d’Ozzie et Harriet ". Musicalement il connut de grand succès, comme " Hello Mary Lou ". Il fut aussi une des vedettes du western Rio Bravo, tourné en 1959 par Howard Hawks avec John Wayne, Dean Martin et Angie Dickinson.
