Het oeuvre van El Greco (1541-1614) is eeuwenlang in de vergeethoek geraakt. In 1908 plaatste de kunsthistoricus Manuel Bartolome Cossio hem echter weer helemaal op de voorgrond. De alerte kunstverzamelaar Markies de la Vega-Inclan wijdt in 1910 in El Greco's eigen Toledo een museum aan hem en de reputatie van de schilder stijgt naar het zenit - even snel als ze ooit was verschrompeld. Naast een reconstructie van het aandeel van de hoofdfiguren in deze spectaculaire herontdekking biedt de tentoonstelling een boeiend overzicht van El Greco's artistieke evolutie op basis van een selectie van markante schilderijen, waaronder de De tranen van de heilige Petrus en het verbluffende Christus wordt ontkleed.
