Nineteen studies of celebrated Byzantine icons at the longest continuously inhabited Christian monastery in the world. The first comprehensive study of the monastery of St Catherine at Mt Sinai in its full historical, art historical, and religious dimensions, the nineteen collected essays in Approaching the Holy Mountain provide a unique view of the longest continuously inhabited Christian monastery. As an important pilgrimage site, Sinai enjoyed an international reputation in the Middle Ages. The monastery also benefited from regional connections to Egypt and the Holy Land. The essays in this volume examine the pilgrims, monks, artists, builders, and scholars who came to the mountain and left their marks on the monastery and its holdings, as well as the image of the monastery that was promoted outside of Sinai. Because of its dry, isolated location in the Sinai desert, the monastery possesses the world's greatest collection of Byzantine icons. These icons have been celebrated in highly popular exhibitions in Athens, London, St Petersburg, New York, and Los Angeles, few longer studies of the icons have been attempted. In this volume authors investigate icons from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries and offer new interpretations of their meaning, provenance, and function. Essays also explore celebrated illuminated Byzantine manuscripts in the library of St Catherine's, pilgrim's accounts of the monastery, a recently excavated early church on the summit of Mt Sinai, liturgy at Sinai during the first Christian millennium, the influence of Sinai on later paintings and engravings, and the recent history of Sinai studies. SIBE 2 comprises the editio princeps of the (so-called) Caucasian Albanian palimpsests found in St. Catherine?s Monastery on Mt. Sinai, which have been deciphered, translated and edited by Jost Gippert, Wolfgang Schulze, Zaza Aleksidze, and Jean-Pierre Mahe in an international project supported by the Volkswagen Foundation. The two volumes (in 4? format) include a historical introduction, a thorough description of the manuscript remains, a detailed account of the grammar of the (hitherto practically unknown) Caucasian ?Albanian? language and its script (including remarks on inscriptions, language history, etc.), an editio minor of the texts (Gospel of John and Lectionary passages from Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts of Apostles, Pauline Epistles, Catholic Letters, and Old Testament fragments) for quick reference, word indices and concordances (Caucasian Albanian ? Old Armenian/Old Georgian/Greek/ English/Udi), and, within the editio princeps, photographs of the individual parchment sheets, a diplomatic rendering of the text in the original script, a Romanized transliteration, and parallel texts in Armenian, Georgian, Greek, Russian, Syriac, English, and Udi. L'hymnographie georgienne ancienne est le temoin le plus direct de l'hymnodie grecque de la Jerusalem des IVe-Ve siecles. Ceci est particulierement vrai des temoins de l'ancien oktoechos georgien, appele Hymnes de la Resurrection, dont chacun des manuscrits revet une physionomie propre. Seule avait ete publiee jusqu'a maintenant la traduction du Sinai georgien 18 du Xe siecle. Le present volume qui comprend la traduction des Sinai 40, 41 et 34, du Xe siecle egalement, apporte, parmi des textes propres consacres au Christ Sauveur, un nouveau type d'hymnes a la vierge Marie : des Eloges de la sainte Mere de Dieu qui chantent, uniquement a l'aide de figures bibliques, le role de Marie dans l'economie du salut.
