‎CHANLER, William Astor (1867-1934):‎

‎Through Jungle and Desert. Travels in eastern Africa.‎

‎London, Macmillian and Co., 1896, in-8vo, Photogravure portrait in frontispiece + XIV + 535 p., illustrated in-text and on plates + 2 maps laid in at the rear-pocket of the book, small legacy stamp ‘Guggisberg’, original publisher’s pictorial dark blue clothbound, gilt lion-head vignette to front board, top edge gilt, light wear at spine ends and corners, rear inner joint partly split, but bookblock firm. Very good to fine copy.‎

‎Seltene erste Ausgabe / First edition of this "well-written work of discovery, adventure and big game hunting" (Czech). A very good copy. Chanler (1867-1934), a wealthy young American, visited German East Africa in 1889 and explored the area around Kilimanjaro. In 1892 he and his friend, Arthur Donaldson Smith, decided to explore the region north of the Tana River in what is now Kenya, engaging as a guide Ludwig von Höhnel, an Austrian naval officer who had recently made the discovery of Lake Turkana with Hungarian explorer Samuel Teleki. Meeting in Zanzibar, the group ascended the Tana by boat before proceeding on foot up its north-western tributary, the Mackenzie (now the Leiburu), and followed the Guasso Nyiro to its source near Merti. "The expedition mapped country previously unknown but had its problems: the porters quit and von Höhnel had to be returned to the coast on a stretcher after being charged by a rhinoceros" (Howgego).
