"Ce volume a été accueilli, dans les journaux et les revues, par des éloges à peu près sans réserves. Il vient de valoir à son auteur, à l'Académie française, un prix de 9.000 francs, comme étant l'ouvrage « le plus éloquent » qui ait paru sur l'histoire de France en ces derniers mois. Ce n'est pas un manuel, ni un petit livre de vulgarisation ; c'est un volume de dimensions assez considérables, œuvre d'un écrivain connu... Le style plaira à beaucoup de personnes ; mais il en est certainement qu'il agacera. M. Madelin appartient à la lignée des historiens romantiques ; ses maîtres sont Taine et Sorel ; comme eux, il attache une très grande importance à la forme, à l'effet littéraire ; il s'efforce à être constamment dramatique ou pittoresque, à frapper l'esprit du lecteur par des images ou des formules...."
