En 1867 a lieu à Paris l'Exposition universelle. Paul Meurice veut créer un livre, intitulé Paris, qui, "sous la forme très usuelle et très pratique d'un guide, serait rédigé par des sommités de tout genre, et qui ferait faire à l'Europe les honneurs de Paris par tous les écrivains et les artistes célèbres de la France". L'éditeur demande à Victor Hugo d'en écrire l'introduction. C'est ce texte qui est réédité ici.

His transactions are reconstructed on the evidence of his dealer's mark applied to drawings - here identified for the first time - and unpublished material drawn from archives in Paris. His dealership in drawings is analysed with a focus on his business network within France and his contacts in England, Italy, Germany and Russia. His relationship with Johann Friedrich StÀdel, a Frankfurt collector and founder of the eponymous institute, is described in detail. Working in proximity to the contemporary art world, Constantin promoted living artists, among them his close friend Pierre-Paul Prud'hon.
