‎First edition, inscribed by the author to Léon Say.American economist and statistician, professor at MIT and later at Yale, Francis Amasa Walker (18401897) was one of the leading figures in nineteenth-century American economic thought. His treatise Money (New York, Henry Holt, 1878) ranks among the earliest major American works devoted entirely to monetary theory. It reflects the debates of the period over the gold standard, bimetallism (the free silver movement), and the monetary reform of 1873. Walker examines the mechanisms of money, internal monetary dynamics (bank notes, coinage, etc.), and issues specific to the contemporary U.S. economy.Unquestionably the most prominent and best known of American [economic] writers (F.W. Tausig, quoted in the Dictionary of American Biography, X:343-44).(The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 1987, vol. 4, p. 850).Copy bearing the authors presentation inscription: With the homage of the Author, very likely addressed to Léon Say, whose engraved bookplate appears on the verso of the front free endpaper. An economist and statesman, former Minister of Finance under the French Third Republic and President of the Senate, Léon Say (18261896) belonged to the eminent liberal and financial dynasty of the Say family, whose most celebrated member was his grandfather Jean-Baptiste Say.Head- and tailcaps and corners slightly rubbed.
