Originally published as Essais dans le goût de ceux de Montagne in 1785 but in an edition of 250 copies only for friends of the author. Published by his son, Voyer de Paulmy. d'Argenson played an important role in the history of France in the 18th century and was a 'homme des lettres' who entertained a large 'salon'. The above work is a portrait-gallery of contemporaries, it contains reflections of the author on what he read, and considerations on France and French society in the 18th century.
