‎Robert Gober built his first sculptures in the late 1970s: dollhouses with all the trimmings, completely homemade, right down to the wallpaper. This from his fascination for what a 'house' symbolizes. Gober, who is relatively quick to express himself as homosexual, supported the actions of Aids Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP) in the 1980s. His 'washbasins' from that period represent 'the impossibility of cleaning yourself'. Subsequently, Gober also focuses on other details from the domestic atmosphere: from beds and doors to drains. He imitates them by hand, but due to the extreme precision with which he does so, his imitations can hardly be distinguished from their industrially produced 'examples'. Gober's hyper-realistic imitation evokes an alienating feeling.‎
