First edition of one of Fick's important works on the generation of heat in the muscle. He investigated this generation “with sensitive thermometers and related its magnitude to the effort of contraction produced. In order to increase accuracy in such investigations, he introduced the concept of methodology of isotonic and isometric determination of the process of muscular contraction (1867, 1882, 1889). ... Fick possessed a crystal-clear manner of thinking and writing. He was modest, without intellectual arrogance, and stood by his convictions fearlessly. ...” (DSB).Adolf Fick was professor of physiology in Zürich (1852-1868) and Würzburg (1868-1899).
