The original book-edition of the ‘Passage of Saint-Gothard’. The Duchess of Devonshire’s poem had appeared in the Morning Chronicle in 1799 and in The Poetical Miscellany, Glasgow 1800, but it was not published in book form until 1802, when three editions appeared, in quarto, octavo and duodecimo, each with the accompanying translation by Jacques Delille. The quarto edition is generally taken to be the earliest. There seem also to be various issues of these editions; the present example does not bear the name of Georgiana Cavendish on the title page, as given in Cioranescu, each of them printing Delille's translation alongside the English text (the Poem: pp. 36 up to 75 and Notes of the Passage .. pp. 76 up to 115). All editions are unknown to Perret's, ‘Guide des livres sur la montagne’ and are very rare indeed. Perret - (cf. Delille; cf. Charles Warren's article "An Alpine bibliographical curiosity" in the Alpine Journal of 1984). Image disp.
