‎Very rare second edition of the history of the war of the Alps, to which is added a history on the town of Coni, founded in 1120 (the historian G. Denina says it was translated from Teofilo Partenio's «Secoli della città di Cuneo»). The first edition was published in 1769, also in Amsterdam. This work, in which the author shows himself no less a great tactician than a skilful writer, is much estimated by the military; this copy is accompanied by 4 geographical engraved folding maps (incl. one large map of the French & Swiss Alps showing esp. the Valais) and plans, and a table which offers in parrallel the details of the passage through the the Alps by Hannibal, after the writings by Polybius, of Titus Livius, the interpretation of the author himself, and the one by Folard. We would like to cite just one of many most interesting observations by Saint-Simon in this work: “Quand (les paysans) se virent réduits à l’extrémité, le désespoir leur fit détruire leur propre bien et prendre un fusil pour errer dans les montagnes, y guetter les passans et faire le métier de voleurs et d’assassins sous le nom de milice”. Quérard VIII/376 (mixes the two editions up, and mentions 5 engraved plates plus a table); Graesse VI/227; Brunet V/60; Hoefer NBG XLIII/116-117. Image disp.‎
