Gilly's first and second visits to the vaudois of Piemont in a beautiful copy. The ‘Vallees of the Vaudois’ is a mountain region of the Alps situated between Chambéry in France and Turin in Italy, not to be confused with the people of the same name in the south west of Switzerland of the canton of Vaud. The Piedmontese dialect has been rather strongly influenced by French. Both these works are most interesting not only from the point of view of geography and travel, but are also quite valuable as historical, ethnographical and religious studies and commentaries. The volumes contain altogether 4 folding facsimiles of written documents, 12 lithographic views, 1 plate showing a road, and 4 folding maps. The maps in vol. 1 represent: 1) part of Piemont et Savoy, with the country of the Vaudois or Valdesi, and showing the route over the Alps by Mont Cenis. / 2) the three protestant valleys of Piémont, Lucerne, San Martino, & Perosa. The map in vol. 2 shows the country of ancient and modern Waldenses. The first volume includes an Appendix, containing copies of ancient manuscripts, and other interesting documents, in illustration of the history and manners of that extraordinary people. The second volume, a first edition, includes some account of the compacts with the ancient princes of Piemont, and the treaties between the English government and the House of Savoy, in virtue of which this sole relic of the primitive church in Italy has continued to assert its religious independence. / The 3rd volume: First edition.
