Rare first abridged edition, a bestseller, illustrated with 24 wood engravings. Forbes' major contribution to the Mont Blanc range were his extensive surveyings of the «Mer de Glace» and other glaciers, resulting in his fine map "Map of the Mer de Glace of Chamouni and of the adjoining district, from an actual survey in 1842-4-6 and 1850. Drawn by August Petermann, Lith. by C. Helfarth, Gotha. Glaciers coloured in blue (scotch on small marginal tear).
