First English edition (followed by the American ed. from New York: Alexander Montgomery 1854). "Includes accounts of early Mont Blanc ascents, reproductions of some of Auldjo’s engravings, an account of early ascents of the Jungfrau, selections of mountain poetry, etc". A well-illustrated work that also includes brief directions for travellers, descriptions of each region in some detail, with approximately a quarter of the content on Italy. The illustrations include numerous views such as Basel, Bern, Brixen, Chamonix, Como, Erlenbach, Geneva, Grindelwald, Interlaken, Lugano, Milan, Padua, Reichenau, Schaffhausen, Schlanders, views of lakes, Lugano, Ivrea, Trient, Venice, Verona, Zug, etc. Cet ouvrage, paru un an après celui d’Albert Smith, contient les récits des premières ascensions du Mont-Blanc et de la Jungfrau.
