‎La toute première "Newton-Edition", réalisée par Thomas Newton, Samuel Barrow (médecin de Chales II), Andrew Marcel et Joseph Addison. Elle estillustrée de deux portraits de Milton en frontispice et de six planches hors-texte pour chaque volume. Reliures de l'époque en plein veau, dos à cinq nerfs ornés de caissons et fleurons dorés ainsi que de pièces de titre et de tomaison de maroquin rouge et noir. Habiles restaurations aux coiffes, mors et coins. ‎London The Cresset Press 1931 Deux volumes. Folio. Un des 195 exemplaires sur papier fait main de Batchelor. (Cet exemplaire est le n°105). Mise en caractères d'après un exemplaire de l'édition révisée de 1674 (Le Paradis perdu) et de la première édition de 1671 (Le Paradis retrouvé). Vingt gravures sur bois (16 à pleine page, plus les pièces de tête et de queue dans chaque volume) ont été conçues et gravées sur bois par Demitrios Galanis. La page de titre et les lettres initiales ont été conçues par Anna Simmons. Les exemplaires ont été imprimés par Bernard Newdigate à Shakespeare Head Press, à Oxford. Volume I, (i)-xii, (1)-442, colophon ; Volume II, (i-vi), (1)-88, colophon. 370 x 260 mm (14Ÿ x 10œ pouces). Vendu avec cet article, un prospectus pour cet ouvrage, daté de 1930, par Cresset Press, New York. Il est imprimé en rouge et noir. 720 mm x 500 mm. Plié. Contient deux gravures (une pleine page) et un feuillet du texte. Au verso, on trouve une excuse à la Golden Cockerel Press pour avoir publié un Milton en même temps qu'elle. "Le dernier et le plus beau livre publié par la Cresset Press" (Sothebys). M. D. Galanis "Qui, sur le continent, est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs graveurs sur bois contemporains" (dépliant publicitaire de Cresset). Pas d'étui. Marques sur les couvertures et tache d'humidité au dos du tome II. A l'intérieur, le volume I est impeccable. Il y a une petite tache sur les derniers feuillets du Volume II (correspondant à la tache d'humidité sur les planches). Autrement, l'ouvrage est en excellent état.‎


‎Two volumes. Folio. One of 195 copies on Batchelor's handmade paper. (This copy #105). Set in type from a copy of the Revised 1674 edition (Paradise Lost) and the first edition of 1671 (Paradise Regained). Twenty wood-engravings (16 full-page, plus head- and tail-pieces in each volume) were designed and engraved on wood by Demitrios Galanis. Title page and Initial letters designed by Anna Simmons. The copies were printed Bernard Newdigate at Shakespeare Head Press, in Oxford. Volume I, (i)-xii, (1)-442, colophon; Volume II, (i-vi), (1)-88, colophon. 370 x 260 mm (14Ÿ x 10œ inches). Sold with this item, is a prospectus for this work, dated 1930, by Cresset Press, New York. This is printed in red and black 720 mm x 500 mm. Folded. Contains two engravings (one full page) and a leaf of the text. To the rear, is an apology to the Golden Cockerel Press for publishing a Milton at the same time that they are. "The last and most beautiful book issued by the Cresset Press" (Sothebys). Mr D. Galanis "Who, on the continent, is considered one of the finest contemporary wood-engravers" (Cresset advertising leaflet). No slipcase. Marking to the covers and an area of damp staining to the back of Volume II. Inside, Volume I is spotless. There is a fractional staining to the last few leaves of Volume II (corresponding to the damp stain on the boards). Otherwise in excellent condition.‎
