‎Summary The new monographic study of the village of Kafr 'Aqab is a contribution to broadening the field of research into the western part of the Limestone Massif in Northern Syria which, until now, had been the subject of only limited interest. The ruins of the site are mainly spread out over a vast rocky headland which is strategically situated at the northern extremity of the gebel Wastani near the Orontes valley in the inland region of Antioch. These ruins reveal the existence of an ancient village with over 80 homes, various communal constructions, a monastery, two ecclesiastic complexes and a fortified building. The study is based on a detailed analysis of surface ruins and has enabled the evolution of the village to be precisely determined from its first phase of occupation between the IInd and IIIrd century until it was abandoned during the medieval period. Most of the constructions date from the Roman and Proto-Byzantine periods. Each architectural group (houses, tombs, churches, agricultural buildings, etc.) is studied separately then resituated in the context of the village and the region thus enabling the author to determine this peasant community's economic, demographic, social and religious history. Mechanisms linked to the growth of the locality are examined in the light of strategies implemented in the appropriation and enhancement of the surrounding land such as controlling water and the diversification of crops which reveals the inhabitants' extraordinary capacity to adapt to their natural environment. Discussion also covers the question of the interactions between the villagers and their relationships with other towns. Kafr ?Aq?b also owed its prosperity to the road network which was ingeniously woven between towns as well as to its proximity to major urban areas in Antioche and Apamea. The ruins reveal this highly favourable location for trade and the circulation of various cultural and artistic movements. Finally, numerous archaeological signs allow the study of the occupation of the village after it was invaded by VIIth century Arab conquerors. The author thus aims to reconstruct the history of this ancient site following a long and fascinating field study. Les ruines du site s' tendent pour l'essentiel sur un vaste promontoire rocheux strat giquement situ l'extr mit nord du gebel Wastani, proximit de la vall e de l'Oronte dans l'arri re-pays d'Antioche. Elles ont r v l l'existence d'une localit antique riche de plus de 80 habitations, d'un monast re, de deux complexes eccl siaux et d'un b timent fortifi . Chaque groupe architectural (maisons, tombeaux, glises, locaux agricoles, etc.) tudi part, puis replacer dans son contexte villageois et r gional, est l'occasion pour l'auteur de pr ciser l'histoire conomique, d mographique, sociale, et religieuse de cette communaut paysanne. Les m canismes propres la croissance de la localit sont aussi examin s au prisme des strat gies mises en oeuvre dans l'appropriation et la valorisation du terroir, tels que la ma trise des ressources en eau et la diversification des cultures qui r v lent l'extraordinaire capacit d'adaptation des hommes leur environnement naturel. Les changes sont galement l'occasion d'aborder la question des interactions entre villageois et des relations entretenues par ces derniers avec les villes. Kafr 'Aqab doit aussi sa prosp rit au r seau routier savamment tiss entre les agglom rations ainsi qu' la proximit des grands centres urbains d'Antioche et d'Apam e. Les vestiges t moignent en effet de cette situation privil gi e, favorable au commerce et la circulation de divers courants culturels et artistiques. ‎Focuses on conflict in village communities of late medieval Drenthe in order to depict a typical peasant society in late medieval Europe. Village communities were the heart of the medieval countryside. But how did they operate? This book seeks to find some answers to that question by focusing on late medieval Drenthe, a region situated in a remote corner of the Holy Roman Empire and part of the prince-bishopric of Utrecht. Drenthe was an overwhelmingly localized, rural world. It had no cities, and consisted entirely of small villages. The social and economic importance of traditionally privileged sections of medieval society (clergy and nobility) was limited; free peasant landowners were the dominant social class. Based on a careful reading of normative sources (Land charters) and thousands of short verdicts given by the so-called ?Etstoel? or high court of justice in Drenthe, this book focuses on three types of conflict: conflicts between villages, feud-like violence, and litigations about property. These three types coincide with three levels of involvement: that of village communities as a whole, that of kin groups, and that of households. The resulting, comprehensive analysis provides a rigorous interrogation of generalized notions of the pre-industrial rural world, offering a snapshot of a typical peasant society in late medieval Europe. Peter (P.C.M.) Hoppenbrouwers (1954) is Professor of Medieval History at Leiden University. He is the co-author, with Wim Blockmans of Introduction to Medieval Europe 300-1550 (2014; 2nd ed.).
