Cette biographie complète et détaillée de l?artiste belge James Ensor se déploie sous la forme d?une chronologie abondamment documentée à l?aide de lettres de et à Ensor et d?articles de journaux et de revues. Elle est magistralement illustrée par une large sélection de chefs-d??uvre du maître d?Ostende, véritable visite guidée à travers son ?uvre pour mieux mettre en lumière son évolution artistique. La connaissance de la vie de l?artiste n?a cessé de s?éto?er grâce à l?auteur de la présente biographie et du Comité Ensor. De nouvelles données ont été découvertes dans des correspondances inédites. On apprend, entre autres, que, début 1885, le père d?Ensor a été attaqué et grièvement blessé dans un café d?Ostende par deux jeunes hommes. L?incident a laissé des traces indélébiles dans la psyché du peintre. Plus tard, en 1892, James Ensor achète en Allemagne une centaine de masques qu?il accroche dans son atelier ; l?e?et est saisissant. Le peintre aime à faire le pitre avec le ?ls d?Ernest et Mariette Rousseau, ses amis bruxellois. Quelques photographies de leurs jeux et de leurs mascarades inspirent le peintre dans sa création. D?autre part, James Ensor n?est pas dépourvu de talents d?écrivain. En 1888, il décrit au jeune Ernest Rousseau une vision ou un rêve fantastique qui démontre l?esprit bouillonnant du jeune peintre. Vous constaterez que certaines informations factuelles du récit biographique sont en rapport avec l?inventaire de son ?uvre (voir le catalogue raisonné publié en 2009 par le Fonds Mercator) : par exemple, la nomenclature des ?uvres est reprise de cet ouvrage de référence. Notons que l?intérêt pour l??uvre hors du commun de James Ensor se verra renforcé avec l?ouverture au public en 2020 de la maison du maître ostendais. Il est également l?auteur du catalogue raisonné des estampes de Léon Spilliaert et de celui de Fernand Khnopff. Il a été le commissaire de différentes expositions (Ensor, Spilliaert, Louise Bourgeois) en Belgique et à l?étranger.

Deze uitgebreide en gedetailleerde levensbeschrijving van de Belgische kunstenaar James Ensor is opgevat als een biografische kroniek, afgewisseld met fragmenten van brieven aan en van Ensor en met teksten uit kranten en tijdschriften. Via schitterende reproducties van een groot aantal meesterwerken ontdekt de lezer het oeuvre van de kunstenaar en diens boeiende artistieke ontwikkeling. Dankzij het onderzoek dat de auteur van deze biografie en het Ensorcomité in de voorbije jaren verricht hebben, werd over het leven van de kunstenaar meer bekend. De studie van onuitgegeven brieven leverde nieuwe gegevens op. Zo vernemen we bijvoorbeeld dat Ensors vader begin 1885 in een Oostends café door twee jongelui werd gemolesteerd en daarbij zware verwondingen opliep. Het voorval liet bij Ensor diepe sporen na. In 1892 bestelde de kunstenaar in Duitsland een honderdtal maskers, die hij in zijn atelier ophing en waar ze een pakkend effect hadden. De schilder maakte graag grapjes met de zoon van zijn Brusselse vrienden Ernest en Mariette Rousseau, en putte creatieve inspiratie uit enkele foto?s van hun spelletjes en zotternijen. Ensor bezat ook literair talent. In 1888 beschreef hij in een brief aan de jonge Ernest Rousseau een droom, een groteske fantasie die van zijn wervelende geest getuigt. Het feitenmateriaal in deze biografie stemt overeen met de gegevens in de oeuvrecatalogus, die door dezelfde auteur werd samengesteld (Mercatorfonds 2009). Onder meer de titels van de werken werden aan deze catalogue raisonné ontleend. De belangstelling voor de kunstenaar en zijn uitzonderlijke oeuvre zal ongetwijfeld nog toenemen naar aanleiding van de openstelling, in 2020, van het vernieuwde James Ensorhuis in Oostende. De artistieke erfenis van James Ensor is enorm rijk en gevarieerd. Auteur Xavier Tricot zegt daar zelf over: ?Reeds meer dan dertig jaar verdiep ik mij in het werk en de persoonlijkheid van Ensor en nog altijd blijven zijn ongelofelijke verbeeldingskracht en stilistische bravoure me verwonderen en verrassen. In the course of the twentieth century, under the influence of the increasing success of Modernism, a misleading image of James Ensor emerged. One might even say that Ensor was confined within a modernist straitjacket. In order to understand the artist?s motivations, this book follows the advice given to the art critic André De Ridder by Ensor himself in 1930: I recommend you re-read Les Écrits de James Ensor, where I explain my research and defend my ideas. Ensor's writings can roughly be divided into two categories his letters and les écrits, encompassing his journalistic work, satirical exhibition reviews, comical speeches, words of thanks and praise, and open letters in brochures. The analysis of Ensor's writings is no small task, for he gave little attention to structure and coherence, and employed a complex ?wondermiraclelikefulistic language archaisms, neologisms, staggering vitriolic rants, hyperboles, from which the essence of his personal views and beliefs is often difficult to distill. Nevertheless, his writings are a crucial source of knowledge on his opinions on Christian faith, rationality, hypocrisy, the dangers of an emerging Flemish nationalism, animal cruelty, the destruction of natural beauty and ancient monuments, and a number of other topics. Ensor believed art ought to be a source of ?ravishment? for both the viewer and the artist, and continually defended the right of the latter to create an incoherent oeuvre, experimenting with ever new and diverse ?manières?, styles, subjects, techniques and genres. This book explores the artist?s writings, ideas and works in greater depth than they have hitherto enjoyed in art-historical scholarship.

This book offers a unique journey through the history of still life in Belgium in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with Ensor as guide. Still life played an important role within the oeuvre of Belgian expressionist and symbolist painter James Ensor (1860-1949). The quality and significance of his intriguing, complex still lifes become clear when placed within the broader development of the genre in Belgium between 1830 and 1930. The still life, which in the early 19th century had degenerated into a decorative genre, devoid of content and artistic importance, was artistically revalued in various ways throughout the nineteenth century: by monumentalising it, by animating the image with dolls and masks, through exoticism, or by making it part of an interior. In this, Ensor's work is the most inventive. Moreover, his long career added to Ensor's artistic impact on many artists who from 1880 onwards lapped towards modernism. His late still lifes - often transformations of early works - are little known and intriguing. Besides an overlook of this important part of Ensor's oeuvre, the book offers an overview of the 19th-century Belgian academic tradition of decorative painting, with intriguing work by lesser-known painters such as Jean Robie, Hubert Bellis, Frans Mortelmans and Henri De Braekeleer, and forgotten female artists such as Berthe Art and Alice Ronner. In the early 20th century, artists such as Louis Thevenet continued to develop the genre of still life in a traditional manner, while innovators such as the late James Ensor, Léon Spilliaert, Marthe Donas, Walter Vaes and Gustave Van de Woestyne created highly personal interpretations. This tradition of the still life painting ends with artists such as Jean Brusselmans and René Magritte, who deconstructed the pictorial space of the 'theatre of things'. This book is published on the occasion of the first exhibition ever entirely devoted to James Ensor's still lifes at Mu.ZEE (Ostend).
