Cet ouvrage marque l’introduction en France du calcul différentiel et constitue le premier traité synthétique en la matière. L’ouvrage débute par une série de définitions et d’axiomes dont deux sont fondateurs du calcul différentiel : la distinction entre les infiniment petits d’ordre successif et la possibilité de considérer une courbe par une succession de droites infiniment petites. Les propositions qui en découlent traitent successivement du calcul des tangentes, des minima et maxima, et des notions de développée et de caustique. Guillaume de l’Hospital doit la majeure partie du contenu de ce traité au mathématicien et physicien suisse Jean Bernoulli (1667-1748) qui lui enseigna entre 1691 et 1692 le calcul différentiel élaboré et rendu public en 1684 par le philosophe allemand Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716). 4to in full contemporary spotted calf, ribbed spine with gilt panels and red label, red edges, 12 folding plates, [19], 234 p. Upper joint partially split, ancient repairs on tips, corners rubbed but a very good copy. G. de l’Hospital’s analysies of the infinitesimal introdiuces in France the differential calculus and constitutes the first overall treatise on the subject. This work had an important circulation and aroused many comments. G. de l’Hospital owes the main part of this work to the Swiss physicien & mathematicien Jean Bernouli who tought him between 1691-1692 the differential calculus which had been published in 1684 by the German Philosopher Leibniz.

Cette oeuvre principale de Guillaume de L'Hospital, à la fois précise et simple d'utilisation, fut longtemps une référence dans son domaine, et connut un vif succès à travers le XVIIIe siècle.2) Première édition en français du traité de Edmund Stone, publié en 1730 en anglais. He first learned to read at the age of eight and was completely self-taught. He mastered both French and Latin in order to read mathematical works. At the age of eighteen, Stone came to the attention of the duke when the latter found Stone's copy of Newton's Principia in his grounds and assumed that it had been removed from his library. Impressed by the young man, the duke "placed him in a position which afforded him opportunity to pursue his studies".Stone translated works of the Marquis de l'Hospital on conic sections (1720) and Bion on scientific instruments (1723). In 1725, he was admitted as a fellow of the Royal Society in 1725 and published A New Mathematical Dictionary. In 1730, he published The Method of Fluxions, both Direct and Inverse: the first part is a translation and reworking in Newtonian notation of De l'Hospital's Analyse des infinement petits (in fact, written by Johann Bernoulli), and the second part is Stone's own.In 1736, he independently found two species of lines of the third order which had been overlooked by Newton and Stirling, but these had been discovered by others a few years earlier. He also published some other mathematical works.Following the death of the Duke of Argyll in 1743, Stone's situation deteriorated and he spent the latter part of his life in poverty’.Article on Edm. Seconde édition illustrée de 11 planches dépliantes. Célèbre ouvrage initialement paru en 1696 et premier écrit français sur le calcul différentiel. Cette édition est corrigée des nombreuses fautes typographiques qui entachent la première, selon Quérard (V, 295).Guillaume de l’Hospital fut élève de Jean Bernouilli. Il a donné son nom à la “Règle de l’Hospital”, qui permet de calculer la valeur limite d’une fraction dans laquelle numérateur et dénominateur tendent tous deux vers zéro. Exemplaire portant l’ex-libris manuscrit de Louis-Henry-Georges Aubert du Petit-Thouars (1724-1794), ingénieur, qui fut lieutenant et commandant des ville et château de Saumur à partir de 1754. Plats de la reliure fortement épidermés avec petits manques de cuir au plat inférieur.

Seconde édition, plus correcte que la première de 1696. "Quoique imprimée sous les yeux de l'auteur, la première édition est remplie de fautes typographiques." (Quérard). C'est le premier traité de calcul différentiel. Cette nouvelle méthode de calcul, développée par Leibniz et Jean Bernouilli, lui avait été enseignée par ce dernier.
