De watergeuzen van Lumey maken zich meester van Den Briel; enkele dagen later krijgen zij Vlissingen in hun greep door medewerking van een deel van de burgerij: een tegenactie van de Hollandse stadhouder Bossu wordt door hen met succes gekeerd. Al in diezelfde maand worden in Engeland troepen geworven om de opstandelingen te helpen, betaald door Nederlandse ballingen aldaar. Voor koningin Elisabeth en haar naaste medewerker Lord Burghley, die dit met oogluiking toelaten, is de overtocht van Engelsen naar de Lage Landen een uitstekend middel om te voorkomen dat vooral het belangrijke Vlissingen in handen van ongewenste machten zal vallen. Op 6 juni arriveren de eerste Engelse eenhe-den in de Walcherse stad, aangevoerd door kolonel Thomas Morgan. Het is aannemelijk, dat zich onder de Engelse soldaten die toen in Vlissingen aankwamen Walter Morgan bevond, een man op wie enige aandacht is gevallen vanwege een geïllustreerd kroniekje over de eerste jaren van effectieve opstand in Holland en Zeeland, dat hij heeft nagelaten. Weinig is van deze krijgsman bekend. Hij zal wel afkomstig geweest zijn uit Wales, evenals talrijke van zijn naamgenoten; mogelijk was hij aan zijn kolonel verwant. Van zichzelf vertelt hij -het is dan 1574 - 'that my yeres be not greate, my welthe for maynteynaunce of my traveil mooche'. Als beroepsmilitair hoopte hij, schrijft hij, zich nuttig te maken voor zijn vaderland. Kennelijk wilde hij dat ook voor de zaak van het protestantisme, ook al zegt hij dit met zoveel woorden niet'.
