Nederlandse vertaling van de volledige werken van de Romeinse dichter Catullus. Over de persoon en het leven van de dichter Catullus is niet veel bekend. Algemeen neemt men aan dat hij leefde van 84 tot 54 v.Chr. In zijn relatief korte leven produceerde hij een groot aantal gedichten. Een grote rol in de gedichten van Catullus speelt een vrouw die hij Lesbia noemt en voor wie hij een hartstochtelijke liefde opvatte. Catullus? kwaliteiten als dichter komen vooral in de carmina maiora tot uiting, die beduidend langer zijn dan de overige gedichten. Een deel van die andere gedichten valt op door het in onze ogen banale karakter en grove taalgebruik. Maar deze gedichten sloten in de oudheid aan bij de zogenaamde urbanitas, de smaak van de stedelijke elite van Rome. In dit boek zijn zowel de oorspronkelijke Latijnse tekst als de Nederlandse vertaling opgenomen. In zijn vertaling is Ype de Jong zo dicht mogelijk bij het oorspronkelijke Latijn gebleven. Hij heeft daarbij gekozen voor een vertaling in jamben, waarbij hij niet heeft vastgehouden aan een vast aantal lettergrepen per vers, omdat je in het Nederlands in de regel meer woorden nodig hebt om iets uit te drukken dan in het elegante Latijn. De inleidende materie, waaronder een bijdrage van Frits Naerebout, samen met de uitgebreide aantekeningen en overige uitleg, maken dit boek voor een heel brede groep geinteresseerden toegankelijk. Voor de Nederlandstalige markt is dit boek de definitieve editie van Catullus werk.
