See for the life of the adventurous Irish novelist, playwright, poet and schoolmaster Oliver Goldsmith, 1728-1774, Wikipedia's article. He is best known for his novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield' (1766) and his pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village' (1770), that he wrote after he witnessed the demolition of an ancient Irish village and destruction of its farms to clear land to become a wealthy man's garden. His poem expresses a fear that the destruction of villages and the conversion of land from productive agriculture to ornamental landscape gardens would ruin the peasantry. His best known play is 'The Good-Natur'd Man' (1768). His posh education seemed to have given him mainly a taste for fine clothes, playing cards, singing Irish airs and playing the flute. There is nevertheless a Goldsmith Lane, and a Goldsmith Avenue, a school is named after him, and there are 3 statues of him in Ireland)
