The eighth title in this convolute is the inaugural lecture held by Elias Carolus d'Engelbronner. Petrus Nieuwland, born in a village near Amsterdam, studied in Amsterdam at the 'Athenaeum Illustre' and at the University of Leiden. In 1793 he was appointed professor of mathematics, physics and astronomy at the University of Leiden. He was also a minor poet. He died 1827. Nieuwland was a friend of Benjamin Petrus van Wesele Scholten, born in 1762 in Amsterdam. He studied law at the local 'Athenaeum Illustre', and was from 1811 till 1813 'conseiller Impériale en Hollande', and from 1813 till his death in 1829 first councilor, then president of the High Court. David Jacob van Lennep, born in Amsterdam in 1774, studied from 1790 at the 'Athenaeum Illustre', then studied law at Leiden. In 1799 he succeeded Daniel Wyttenbach as professor of Greek, Latin, History, Rhetoric and Antiquities. He was also a neolatin poet. He died in 1853. He spoke at the funeral of Nieuwland. Elias Carel d'Engelbronner, born in 1779 in Amsterdam, studied law at the 'Athenaeum Illustre'. In 1805 he was nominated rector of the 'Schola Latina' at Zaltbommel, and in 1809 of the school at Middelburg. He translated the Code Napoléon into Dutch, Amsterdam 1810. Later he became prosecutor at Goes. There he became involved in the forgery of signatures, 'valsche handtekeningen onder een onderhandsche geschrift'. In 1817 he was sentenced to imprisonment in a house of detention at Gouda, for defalcation and committing forgery. He died in 1832. Johannes Conrad d'Engelbronner, or Jan Coenrad d'Engelbronner, 1782-1819, was his brother. He was a student of David Jacob van Lennep, and finished his studies as 'juris utriusque doctor'. He moved to Zaltbommel, apparantly together with his brother, the rector. In the 'Gepreviligeerde Zalt-Boemelsche kantoor- en schrijf-almanak' of 1811 Mr. Jan Coenrad d'Engelbronner appears as 'praktizeerend advocaat'. He died young in the nearby city Tiel as clerk. The contributors of this convolute were all from Amsterdam, studied law at the 'Athenaeum Illustre' and probably knew each other) (Collation: 1: *4, A-F4, G2; 2: *2, A-I4, K6 (leaf K5 verso & K6 verso blank); 3: *2, A-G4, H6 (minus leaf H6; H5 verso blank); 4: pi2, A-G4, H2; 5: pi2, A-M4 (leaf M4 verso blank); 6: *4, A-M4, N2; 7: *4, A-K4, L6, (minus leaf L6; L5 verso blank); 8: pi2, A-D4, E6 (minus leaf F6, F5 verso blank)) (Photographs on request) ‎
