In de eerste helft van de 12e eeuw vindt er een grote wending plaats op het gebied van kunst, economie en politiek. Volgens Duby is het jaar 1134 het keerpunt en speelt Bernard van Clairvaux een centrale rol in deze ontwikkeling. Terwijl het Franse koningschap krachtiger wordt en de stedelijke economie in opkomst is, formuleert Bernard de principes van de cistercienzerkunst, gebaseerd op het armoede-ideaal. Hij zet zich daarbij af tegen de pracht die de benedictijnen van Clyny bij hun eredienst gebruikten. Het boek heeft een register, maar is nauwelijks geannoteerd. Jammer genoeg zijn er slechts 16 zwart-wit foto's opgenomen, maar dat is altijd nog meer dan in de Franse pocket-editie van 1979 die er geen enkele heeft.
