De 1896 à 1908, Paul Margueritte (1860-1918) collabore avec son frère Victor ; ils entament ensemble un vaste roman sur la guerre de 1870, “Une époque” (1898-1904), en quatre parties (Le Désastre, Les Tronçons du glaive, Les Braves Gens, La Commune). L'idée d'une réplique au livre de Zola, “La Débâcle”, n'était certainement pas absente de leur projet. S'ils ne nient pas les souffrances de cette période, ils exaltent l'espoir et le sentiment national qui, selon eux, animaient tous les combattants. Opposant les individus aux foules, la foi des hommes à la conviction des groupes, ils dressent un tableau complet des débats passionnés que provoquaient encore la défaite et la Commune à la fin du siècle.
