Prima edizione francese del 1790 di questa celebre opera sulla storia della mineralogia del geologo e mineralogista tedesco Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749-1817). Dopo aver preso un dottorato in paleontologia a Lipsia Werner si dedicò allo studio dei minerali e stilò la prima classificaizone dei minerali basata sulla composizione chimica anzichè sugli aspetti morfologici. Fu inoltre il fondatore della teoria nettunista secondo la quale tutti i materiali presenti sulla crosta terrestre vi sarebbero stati deposittati in seguito al ritirarsi di un grande mare che originariamente ricopriva tutta la terra.
