Rara pubblicazione del 1836 sulle scoperte lunari di John Herschel (1792-1871) celebre astronomo e matematico inglese commentate dall'astronomo, matematico fisico e politico Dominique Francois Jean Arago (1786-1853). Il contenuto di questo opuscolo finì al centro di un lungo dibattito definito in seguito "Great Moon Hoax" "La grande burla della Luna". Il giornalista americano John Locke decise di pubblicare una serie di articoli sul New York Post descrivendo le scoperte del celebre astronomo britannico Herschel che, con l'ausilio di un potente telescopio collegato a un proiettore alimentato a "idro-ossigeno", affermava di aver visto chiaramente la vita sulla luna: creature fantastiche, foreste, mari, giacimenti minerari. Locke nel suo articolo citava fonti scientifiche attendibili e le descrizioni sembravano cosi veritiere che in breve la notizia ebbe molta risonanza e circolò su numerose testate internazionali. The american journalist John Locke decided di publish a series of articles in New York Post describing the discoveries of the famous british astronomer Herschel that observed different strange animals, mines, seas and forests using a potent telescope. Locke in his article cited scientiphic articles and descriptions seems so true that in a brief time the information circulated in different internation magazines. After some year Locke admitted the fraud. In the same years Edgar allan Poe published a similar article and accused Locke of plagiarism. In very good conditions. Cover is missing.
