Exemplaire relié à l'époque : bradel demi-percaline vermillon, lettre or sur pièce de titre et fleuron au dos, couvertures conservées. ---- Marcel Réja, docteur Paul Meunier (1873-1957), était aliéniste à l'asile de Villejuif. Il préface en 1898 l'ouvrage de August Strinberg INFERNO publié au Mercure de France chez qui il sort L'ART CHEZ LES FOUS, l'un des premiers ouvrages en France à étudier sous un aspect esthétique la création artistique des aliénés, mais aussi des enfants ou des "sauvages". Publié huit ans après la première exposition d'oeuvres de malades mentaux au Bethlem Royal Hospital de Londres, Réja y analyse le processus de création et les "conditions intérieures susceptibles de mettre en oeuvre l'activité artistique". Il étudie également la prose et la poésie de ceux que Blavier appellera bien plus tard les Fous Littéraires, en consacrant quelques pages de son livre à Jean-Pierre Brisset et particulièrement à LA SCIENCE DE DIEU paru en 1900. L'influence de ses travaux par leurs diffusions dans les milieux lettrés et artistiques fut importante, et l'ouvrage est une référence historique de ce qui deviendra quarante ans plus tard l'Art Brut. Entre 1905 et 1914, la revue Vers et Prose de Paul Fort a publié tous les grands noms de la littérature. On y trouve tous les genres, toute l'Europe, toutes les écoles : Jarry, Valéry, Apollinaire, Claudel, Gide, Zweig, Stevenson, Mallarmé, etc.. C'est la revue où s'est élaborée la modernité. Between 1905 and 1914, the review Vers et Prose by Paul Fort published all the great literary names. Every genre, every school, every european litterature appeared in it. This undeservedly-forgotten review, compared by Jules Romains to the salons of Mme du Deffand, is a little-known site of modernity.
