‎THOMAS CAMPBELL ‎
‎GERTRUDE OF WYOMING AND OTHER POEMS ‎

‎LONDON PRINTED FOR LONGMAN HURST REES ORME AND BROWN VERN 1810‎

Reference : 21237

In buone condizioni. Legatura in buone condizioni. In 16. Dim. 17x10,5 cm. Pp. (6)+252. Third edition of 1810 of this poetic work by the scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844). This poetic work deals with the notorious 1778 Wyoming Valley [Pennsylvania] Massacre, an event which has been called "the surpassing horror of the Revolution." John Butler, the leader of the massacre was a loyalist commander in the Revolutionary War. In 1776 he organized a band of motley marauders - white men and Indians. He later accompanied Sir John Johnson in his raid on the Schoharie and Mohawk Indian settlements in 1780. But the real particularity of this work is the "fore-edge painting", a painting that appears only with a folding of fore edges. When closed the book is a common tome. This makes this work a unique book. This technique was very popular duraing 18th century to reach its peak to the beginning of 20th century. The drawing represents an animated view with people, mountgains and cattles. Antique handwritten signature in the verso of the first blank page. In good conditions. Leather coeval cover with embossed decorations in the edges and spine in good general conditions lightly worn in the extremities. Binding in good conditions. Inside pages are in good conditions with occasional foxing. In 16. Dim. 17x10,5 cm. Pp. (6)+252.

‎
