All'opera, concepita e promossa da Giuseppe Vallardi, collaborarono studiosi e valenti artisti dell'epoca, tra cui F. Zuccari, G. d'Adda, L. Cagnola, A. Nava e G. De Castro. Le tavole sono distribuite per modo da offrire un'idea adeguata cosi' dei piu' grandiosi e notabili aspetti del Tempio, come delle piu' minute sue parti All'inizio storia del Duomo di Milano poi descrizione della tavole. Seguono 64 bellissime tavole architettoniche 35 delle quali sono a doppia pagina. Quasi tutte le planche hanno la velina originale di protezione. Frontespizio figurato con i nomi dei principlai architetti e tre ritratti in medaglione (Gian Galeazzo Visconti, San Carlo Borromeo, Napoleone I).
