The work was published in instalments for the first time in 1894 in the Gazzetta Polacca and collected in one volume in 1896. 24 planches hors-texte en noir et blanc (complet), dont 17 gravures originales, 3 vues, 2 cartes et 2 plans 1ere traduction en volume, 1900, des extraits étaient déjà parus par la même traductrice dans Le Correspondant en 1896 et 1897 Contents, Chapitres : Quo vadis ? est un roman historique de l'écrivain polonais Henryk Sienkiewicz, publié en feuilleton dans la Gazeta Polska à partir de mars 1895, et traduit pour la première fois en France dans la Revue blanche en 1896. - Quo vadis ? (qui signifie en latin 'Où vas-tu ?') dépeint les persécutions que les chrétiens ont subies sous Néron au Ier siècle en racontant l'histoire des amours d'un patricien, Marcus Vinicius, et d'une jeune femme chrétienne, Callina, surnommée Lygie. Le titre évoque la question qu'aurait posée saint Pierre fuyant Rome et rencontrant Jésus-Christ portant sa croix : « Quo vadis, Domine ? » (« Où vas-tu, Seigneur ? »). Sienkiewicz transpose en fait l'oppression russe sur la Pologne alors divisée, le tsar représenté par Néron voulant convertir les catholiques uniates à l'orthodoxie. Sienkiewicz, lors de ses séjours en Italie, se réunissait en effet avec des résistants polonais à Rome dans une chapelle sur la via Appia, lieu où aurait été prononcé le « Quo vadis ? » . Quo vadis ? vaudra à Sienkiewicz de recevoir en 1905 le prix Nobel de littérature. Les sources littéraires du roman se retrouvent dans les Actes de Pierre, bien que l'auteur ait plus probablement utilisé les récits des guides romains que les Actes de Pierre directement, et Acté d'Alexandre Dumas, roman historique sur la concubine de Néron. - Ce roman historique a fait l'objet de nombreuses adaptation au théâtre et au cinéma. - Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius de Oszyk-Sienkiewicz, né le 5 mai 1846 à Wola Okrzejska (Pologne), et mort le 15 novembre 1916 à Vevey (Suisse), est un écrivain polonais, lauréat du Prix Nobel de littérature en 1905. Il est le neveu du poète polonais Karol Sienkiewicz.
