Seconde édition revue et mise à jour de cet ouvrage qui fut publié pour la première fois en 1940. "Tous les géographes connaissent la première édition de cet excellent ouvrage, dont il a été rendu compte ici en 1942 ; elle était depuis longtemps épuisée et, d'autre part, la Seconde Guerre mondiale a fortement marqué la Tunisie en 1942-1943. Une nouvelle édition était donc hautement désirable. Jean Despois l'a préparée avec une conscience qui lui fait honneur, il a parcouru à nouveau toute la région pour se rendre compte par lui-même des changements survenus. L'Institut des Hautes Etudes de Tunis, qui présente le volume dans ses publications, a droit à nos remerciements pour sa réussite matérielle. Il s'agit donc d'un ouvrage aussi solide que bien présenté, qui sera plus que jamais la source de notre information pour la Tunisie orientale." (Paul Veyret, Revue de géographie alpine, 1956)
