De Pia Desideria is het populairste religieuze emblemataboek uit de zeventiende eeuw. Na emblemataboeken over ?wereldlijke liefde? (van o.a. Hooft, Cats) volgden al snel soortgelijke boeken over ?geestelijke liefde?, in het geval van de Pia Desideria in de vorm van een zoektocht van de ziel naar God. In 45 emblemata met een motto en uitleggend gedicht wordt die zoektocht geschetst. ? De eerste Nederlandse vertaling van de oorspronkelijk Latijnse tekst uit 1624. ? De vertaling is, net als het origineel, in metrische verzen.
