‎Summary The proceedings of the S.I.E.P.M. Colloquium at Maynooth published in this volume shed new light on the development of the perception of the other within the different philosophical, religious, and cultural traditions in the late Middle Ages as well as the early modern era in both Christian and Islamic thought. The contributions consider not only the theological background but also the philosophical presuppositions of the concepts which were used to develop various apologetic writings and theological treatises that dealt with questions of cultural and religious difference. The rich and diverse medieval and early modern tradition of engaging with the other and the arguments for or against toleration on topics that are equally diverse are discussed with reference to both the Western and Eastern Christian tradition, to the contributions of Islamic Thinkers on the topic, and to the flourishing tradition of a constructed interreligious dialogue such as that between Christians and Jews. Finally, this book includes a number of important investigations exploring the relationship between toleration and rights not only within Europe but also in the lands of the so-called new world and its indigenous peoples where arguments of exclusion were grounded intheories such as grace-based dominium. ‎Recueil des plaidoyers de Jolly, Farconet et Savoye fils, précédés d'un discours préliminaire de Savoye, hymne à la tolérance, à la liberté et à l'égalité des religions, dans une affaire jugée par le Parlement de Grenoble : la contestation de la validité du mariage et du testament d'une femme protestante, dont l'arrêt fit droit à la plaignante. Victoire judiciaire de première importance, publiée neuf ans avant l'édit de tolérance de Louis XVI (7 novembre 1787).La question du mariage protestant était en effet au coeur du débat juridique des années 1770-1787. Depuis la révocation de l'Édit de Nantes (1685), les protestants n'avaient plus d'existence légale en France : leurs mariages, célébrés hors de l'Église catholique, étaient juridiquement nuls, privant leurs enfants de légitimité et leurs veuves de tout droit successoral. « Le problème le plus urgent était celui de l'état civil, en particulier celui des mariages juridiquement nuls dès lors qu'ils n'étaient pas célébrés à l'église, et donc à l'origine de nombreuses contestations » (Musée protestant). En 1770, Portalis avait rédigé avec Pazery une Consultation sur la validité des mariages entre deux protestants, dont Voltaire avait dit « ce n'est point là une consultation, c'est un véritable traité de philosophie, de législation et de morale politique ». ‎The scarce first edition of Leibnitz' important work on the tolerance of religions. Leibnitz was interested in the question of religious controversy all of his life, and already at a young age, he studied Laurentius Valla and Luther. According to Leibnitz, one of the resons for religious controversy and dispute lies in the lack of adequate method for discussing and debating such questions. He reflexts thoroughly on the nature of religious controversy. What he means with tolerance of relions is precicely the possibily of discussing religious matters freely on the basis of normative rules that tells us how to conduct the debate.‎
