Un in-16 de 150 x 94 mm en deux parties de (xix) 109 + (xv) 64 pp. Reliure maroquin d'époque, dos à ornements horizontaux avec manques en coiffe et en queue, portrait du pape Alexandre VII en frontispice, mention "ROME" à l'encre sur le haut du portrait. Traduit de l'italien (du français ?) par J. B. Gent. Imprimatur de 1663, dédicace à Mathias von Beuningen, index par ordre alphabétique ("Table"), texte. Bandeaux et lettrines. Accompagné d'un second relié avec le premier, "A new relation of Rome as to the Government of the city, the Noble Families thereof, the Revenue and Expences of the Pope, the Courts of Justice, the Offices, the Congregations of Cardinals, and other Particulars very Curious. Taken out of one of the Choicest Cabinets of Rom, and English'd by Gio[vanni] Torriano, an Italian and Professor of the Italian Tongue", également édité par T. Mabb la même année, décoré de bandeaux. Selon les commentateurs Willems et Goldsmid, le pseudonyme d'Angelo Corraro cache en réalité Charles de Ferrare du Tot, conseiller du roi en la chambre du parlement de Normandie à Rouen. L'ouvrage en français fut imprimé sous une fausse adresse à Amsterdam par Daniel et Lodewijk Elzevier, à partir de l'édition originale, typographiée la même année, à Rouen, par Laurent Maurry sous le pseudonyme d'Almarigo Lorens. La mention de "traduction depuis l'italien" semble poursuivre le jeu de masques initié par l'édition originale en français. ************************************************ London, T. Mabb, 1664. A 16mo (150 x 94 mm) in two parts of (xix) 109 + (xv) 64 pp. Contemporary morocco binding, spine with horizontal decorations, losses at the head and tail, portrait of Pope Alexander VII as frontispiece, "ROME" in ink above the portrait. Translated from the Italian (from the French?) by J. B. Gent. Imprimatur of 1663, dedication to Mathias von Beuningen, index in alphabetical order ("Table"), text. Headpieces and initials. Accompanied by a second volume bound with the first, "A New Relation of Rome as to the Government of the City, the Noble Families thereof, the Revenue and Expenses of the Pope, the Courts of Justice, the Offices, the Congregations of Cardinals, and other Particulars Very Curious. Taken out of one of the Choicest Cabinets of Rome, and English'd by Giovanni Torriano, an Italian and Professor of the Italian Language," also published by T. Mabb the same year, decorated with headpieces. According to commentators Willems and Goldsmid, the pseudonym Angelo Corraro actually conceals Charles de Ferrare du Tot, a councilor to the king in the Parliament of Normandy in Rouen. The French version of the work was printed under a false address in Amsterdam by Daniel and Lodewijk Elzevier, from the original edition, typeset the same year in Rouen by Laurent Maurry under the pseudonym Almarigo Lorens. The mention of "translation from Italian" seems to continue the game of masks initiated by the original French edition.‎

Un autre exemplaire des deux ouvrages joints a été vendu chez Drouot en février 2024, mais sans le portrait en frontispice. ***************** A very rare set comprising an original English edition of this book on the intrigues of the Vatican at the time and a book of budgetary commentary on the papacy.
