Uitgegeven ter gelegenheid van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling Passage 44 Brussel, 21 december 1988 - 5 maart 1989. Tot 1970 bleef Tibet voor de Westerse wereld een raadsel. Toen China echter zijn grenzen openstelde, kwam dit "land van de sneeuw", met zijn kunst en ambachten, zijn unieke vorm van boedhisme en zijn fascinerende bevolking, in het centrum van de belangstelling te staan. Dit boek is gewijd aan een tot nog toe niet bestudeerd aspect van Tibet, de tijgertapijten.
