Synopsis: This is a book examining the life and work of this craftsman, one of the most creative and influential artists of the Late Middle Ages. Dr Morand assesses Sluter's place in European art history, his influence and his character as a medieval artist on the threshold of the Renaissance. Reviews: Until the publication of this study of Claus Sluter (d. 1406), little material was available in English on the sculptor. Morand's scholarly and detailed account of this giant of medieval art history provides the historical background needed to appreciate his work. The author, a medievalist, has written earlier books on Jean Pucelle ( Jean Pucelle , Oxford Univ. Pr., 1962) and the Boucicaut Master. In the present work, her text is complemented by Finn's stunning color and black-and-white photographs, which record, perhaps for the first time, the complete surviving body of Sluter's work. (Some of his sculptures were demolished during the French Revolution.) A valuable art history text, recommended for academic and larger public libraries. - Margarete Gross, Chicago P.L.
